Members of Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 3-10 (Callao, VA) provided VIP escort service by ferrying distinguished guests to the U.S. Coast Guard Training ship The “Barque EAGLE”. The VIPs were shuttled from Coast Guard Station St. Inigoes to near Point Lookout, Maryland where the EAGLE was anchored.

EAGLE was on her way to dry dock at Baltimore after finishing a world tour. During that cruise, 63 officer candidates and 22 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Officers-in-training experienced 5 functional areas of shipboard life: deck, operations, engineering, damage control and support.

At 295 feet in length, the EAGLE is the largest tall ship flying the Stars and Stripes, and the only active square rigger in U.S. government service.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the civilian volunteer arm of the United States Coast Guard and administers the public programs such as recreational boating safety courses, courtesy vessel inspections, safety patrols and environmental safety monitoring.

For more information about the EAGLE, the Coast Guard, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and specifically Flotilla 3-10, call Judy Julian at 804-580-6765 or Joe Riley at 804-472-4721.

Christchurch School’s Smith is Coach-of-the-Year, Players named to All-State

For the second year in a row, Christchurch School Head Lacrosse Coach Vince Smith has been named VISAA Division II Coach-of-the-Year. Earlier this month, the lacrosse team won its second straight VISAA Division II state championship. Other schools in Division II are Highland High School, Hampton Roads Academy, Tandem Friends, Seton, Wakefield Country Day, Steward School, Virginia Episcopal, Fishburne Military, Covenant, North Cross, Norfolk Collegiate, Wakefield, Massanutten Military Academy, Walsingham Academy, and Fredericksbury Academy.

Smith, who also teaches history and is the Assistant Dean of Students, came to Christchurch three years ago from a coaching position with the Chicago Machine of the Major League Lacrosse. Smith was a two-time high school All-American lacrosse player, twice All-State, three-time All-Central Virginia player, and twice All-Prep. As a college freshman, Smith was rated the #4 Blue Chip Midfielder by Face-Off magazine. A graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, he was twice all-ODAC and as a senior was All-American.

CCS AD Ben Thompson has this to say about Coach Smith – “Coach Smith Vince Smith is one of the most genuine, committed coaches I know. He has handled success with grace and challenging circumstances with more grace. You’d be hard pressed to find a coach that works harder, but what is even more impressive is the continued relationships that he has built and maintained with his players. Those two things, along with his ability to coach on the field, have given him all the tools needed to be successful. Christchurch is very fortunate to have a coach of his caliber.”

Coach Smith has announced that five Seahorses were named to the All-State Lacrosse team: Duncan Morris ’13 and Reid White ’13, both of Charlottesville, were named to the All-State team at attack, Pat Young ’12 of Ewing, NJ was selected at midfield, Shaq Townsend ’12 of Gloucester at defense, and Connor Keehn of Oak Hill as goalie.

In a special thank you to the team, Coach Smith remarked, “I say thank you to the players for a great year. They worked hard and sacrificed a lot this season to make it memorable for all of us. I'd like to extend a special thank you to the seniors. They were tremendous this year, and I cannot thank them enough for the memories, from the classrooms to the athletic fields, helping our team win two championships and helping our school to thrive and helping to change the school culture through the Great Journeys program.”
